Many Christians who love the Word of God and have gifts for passing it on to others feel unprepared, unskilled, and unqualified to understand it and apply it to real life. This CoLab introduces maturing believers, who are 16 years of age or older, to some of the foundational convictions of faithful Bible teaching. Through collaboration and experimentation, participants will learn essential skills which can be applied to many different callings and contexts, including:
  • Personal Study & Devotions
  • Teaching in Children’s, Youth & Adult Sunday School
  • Mentoring Relationships
  • Leading at Camps & VBS
  • Preaching Sermons
  • Leading a Community Group
  • And more!
Using the online Charles Simeon Trust - First Principles course as the main resource, participants will be provided instruction and exercises to gain confidence to more clearly listen for God’s voice in Scripture, and renew their commitment to faithful Bible teaching.

Participants will independently complete eight individual online lessons and join others for four monthly gatherings to learn from one another.

This CoLab consists of three primary components:
  1. Instruction: The first component is instruction for the participant’s apprehension of convictions, skills, and principles for studying and teaching the Bible. The instruction component is delivered through 8 online lectures. Participants should complete the Study Questions while, or immediately after, watching the video instructions.
  2. Practice: The second component is practice. Participants will independently apply some of the skills and principles taught in the course. This is done by completing the Sermon Preparation Worksheet for passages as indicated.
  3. Dialogue: Participants will then present their work at monthly group meetings for discussion, analysis, and loving critique aimed at improving each other’s work.

By the end of this CoLab, participants will:
  • Allow the taught Word itself to inform their lives in ways consistent with the reasons the Holy Spirit saw fit to include them in Scripture.
  • Be able to more appropriately apply God’s Word to the lives of God’s people today.
  • Become more confident in interpreting and teaching a Bible passage because of their increasing skill in allowing the Scripture to inform and shape their lessons, studies or sermons.
  • Improve the quality of their own study and preparation for teaching by listening more carefully to the text of Scripture.
  • Grow in their commitment to expository Bible teaching/preaching.

This CoLab consists of 8 online lessons + 4 gatherings over 4 months.
Each participant is expected to:
  • Attentively view all video lectures and thoughtfully complete the written study questions for each lecture.
  • Prepare teaching/preaching outlines for each practice text (4) as indicated, using the ‘Sermon Preparation Worksheet’ provided, employing skills taught in the lectures.
  • Attend and actively participate in each monthly meeting where two lessons will be discussed each time.
